Training of Graduate and Postdoctoral Students
At Shriners Hospital I work with residents in orthopedic surgery. There I staff hand and related upper extremity clinics and perform surgical procedures. I make yearly trips with Shriners Hospital for Children to Puerto Rico and Cyprus where residents and postgraduate fellows also attend. In addition I attend relevant clinical conference presentations and I am a lecturer in the Pediatric Upper Extremity series for orthopedic residents at Shriners Hospital for Children. At Baystate I continue to work closely with surgical residents and medical students who have an interest in hand surgery. For fifteen years I participated in Hand Surgery call at Baystate Medical Center where my duties included interaction with emergency room residents and those in general surgery who were on the trauma service.
Teaching Responsibility
I participate in the Pediatric and Congenital Upper Extremity Lecture series offered at Shriners Hospital for Children in Springfield. I am a past participant and scheduled speaker in hand conferences given at Baystate Medical Center where staff in orthopedic surgery and plastic surgery regularly presented topics in hand surgery.. Medical students on rotation, residents in orthopedic surgery, general surgery, hand therapists, occupational therapists and physical therapists attend. I have lectured on several occasions to Emergency Medicine residents on various topics related to acute care of the injured hand. I am available to Medical Students on their surgical rotation during their specialty training. Medical Students often observe hand surgery at Baystate. The past six years I have assisted first year medical students at Tufts University School of Medicine during their hand dissections in anatomy lab through a program of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand entitled "Helping Hands." I help to instruct current Pediatric and Med/Peds residents from Baystate when they rotate through Shriners.
